Earliest meeting: Thursday 26th September 1844
Final meeting: Friday 27th September 1844
The tiny Lancashire village of Enfield, near to Clayton-Le-Moors, is in the Hyndburn district of the county. A two day race meeting was staged on Thursday 26th and Friday 27th September 1844 which attracted ‘an unusual assemblage of nobility and gentry of the neighbourhood’. The main race on the first day was the Burnley Stakes over 2 miles which went to Mr Lee’s Harkaway from the inventively named £5 Note. On Friday 27th September the day opened with the Blackburn Hurdle, over 2 miles and 6 leaps, which was won by Mr Haworth’s Lady Bentinck, beating Dandy and Jack. Towards the end of the afternoon the Enfield Stakes was secured by Meg Merrilies for Mr Hayes.
